We had left the Frontier Town and were walking through a prairie.
After changing back into my usual robes, I explained everything.
I explained that I was not really her friend. That I was the true Ashen Witch, Elaina. And the reason why she had been arrested.
ââ¦Hmm? Wait a minute. What on earth do you mean?â
In response to me yammering on and explaining everything, Amnesia seemed to have difficulty processing the situation, as I had expected.
âLike I said, youâre not the Ashen Witch. The reason why you think youâre Elaina is because you picked up my diary by mistake.â
ââ¦But I donât remember that happeningâ¦â
âRead this.â
It would probably be faster to have her read it than for me to explain further.
I handed her the diary.
ââ¦â¦â
After she had turned a few pages as we walked, she whispered, âMy name isâ¦Amnesia⦠Huh. That seems to fit me better than Elainaâ¦â She took out a pen.
With incredibly natural movements, she started writing while walking.
Her lovely penmanship looked like it was written by the exact same person who had penned the words in all the other entries.
At this point, she seemed to have finally realized she was Amnesia.
âButâ¦I certainly did think it was awfully strange⦠It was written right there in the diary that I was a witch, even though I didnât feel like I could use magic at allâ¦â
âIâm sure.â
âAnd even though I didnât think I was all that cute when I looked in a mirror, I spent an awful lot of time praising my own appearanceâ¦â
âDo you want to get knocked over the head?â
Are you looking for a fight? Is that what youâre doing?
âBut why did youâumm, Ashen Witch, Elaina? Why did you help me? Iâm grateful, but Iâm afraid I donât understand your motivations.â
âItâs written in your diary that your hometown is the Holy City, Esto, right?â
âHuh? Mm. Seems that way.â
âWell, I have an interest in that place. But since I canât get in unless Iâm with youââ
Amnesia clapped her hands sharply and nodded vigorously. âI see! So it was a scheme to use me to get into Esto, right?â
Yes, but wasnât there another way to say that? It makes me seem like the bad guy.
âIs it all right if I accompany you on your journey?â
âOf course!â She broke into a smile. I had more or less realized it already, but she didnât seem to be a bad person. âI was planning to ask you the same thing. Since it seems like I canât get by without my diaryâI was just thinking Iâd like to have someone like you with me. Thatâs why when you told me you were my friend, I was glad. Oh, so this kind of person was my friend, I thoughtâ¦though I guess that wasnât really trueâ¦â¦â She seemed just a bit sad.
ââ¦â¦ So what should I call you from now on?â
âAmnesia! And you?â
âElaina.â
âNice to meet you, Elaina.â
âSame to you, Amnesia.â
Our exchange was a little strange, and she and I laughed in mutual embarrassment. After that, as if nothing had happened, we lined up shoulder to shoulder with each other and took off walking.
